Trans Justice in our Schools and in our Legislatures

On October 30, 2015, State Representative Jess Kramer, Republican from Kewaskum, introduced Assembly Bill 469, which would prohibit school districts from allowing transgender students to use the bathrooms or changing rooms associated with their identified gender. The bill garnered national attention, and originally seemed scheduled for a quick vote, but now appears ready to die in Committee, with Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald telling the Associated Press that his caucus hasn’t discussed the bill. That turnaround may be due to intense lobbying and activist efforts of gay and trans rights advocates, including the Wisconsin Chapter of the Gay Straight Alliance for Equality, better known as GSAFE. Brian J. is GSAFE’S Senior Director of Education and Policy. Brian joined our Brian Standing to talk about the status of the bill and the resilience of trans and allied activists.
