Tony Wilkin Gibart of Midwest Environmental Advocates joins Thursday Buzz host Tony Castañeda for an update on the news of Enbridge’s oil spill in Jefferson County two months ago.
The spill, publicized about a month after Enbridge notified state and federal agencies, was initially reported to be in the range of 2-3 barrels. By mid-December, the company had amended its earliest estimate to 70,000 gallons of oil, the equivalent of 1,650 barrels. So far tests have not shown the presence of oil in the water of a half-dozen local landowners, nor in a nearby creek and lake, but local residents have been asked to monitor their water for any discoloration and odor.
In other environmental news, Gibart discusses the suit Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce brought against the Department of Natural Resources, which argues that the DNR can’t force businesses to test and clean up PFAS – because PFAS chemicals have never been designated as hazardous materials under an “administrative rule”.
