Natural gas was once considered a waste product of oil production but has become one of the major fuels of the human economy, and its proponents say that natural gas is a “clean-burning” fuel.
However, the major components of natural gas are significant contributors to climate change. One of those components, methane, is more than 28 times as potent as carbon dioxide at trapping heat in the atmosphere, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency. Burning natural gas also produces pollutants such as Nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide, particulates, and volatile organic compounds.
A summary of potential impacts of two new power plants under consideration in WisconsinHealthy Climate Wisconsin recently completed an analysis of two new proposed natural gas-fired power plants, both on the shores of Lake Michigan, one at Oak Creek and the other at Paris, Wisconsin.
