The earth is about 4.5 billion years old. A shockingly short time after the earth was formed – a mere 100 to 800 million years later – the earliest forms of life appeared in a primordial soup of water, carbon and an enzyme known as nitrogenase. This peculiar chemical has the unique ability to grab nitrogen out of the air and turn it into something a young organism can use. That enzyme and that history of life’s origins is the subject of a new research project at the University of Wisconsin, led by bacteriologist Betül Kaçar, who joined Monday Buzz host Brian Standing on February 10, 2025.
