Free Expression Can Exist-But Will It?

Despite signing an Executive Order entitled “Restoring Freedom of Speech and Ending Federal Censorship”, Trump and his administration have wasted no time in violating it, says Thursday Buzz guest journalist Andy Herschfeld.

Herschfeld, whose reporting appears in Daily Beast, Slate, Al Jazeera, CNBC and others, talked with host Tony Castañeda about the multipronged approach Trump is taking to undermine the press. Censoring speech, investigating news organizations and threatening to revoke broadcast licenses can chill independent or opposing voices and influence the way media outlets cover news events.

At the same time, media influencers and creators, whose frequently hyper-partisan work is not held to the same standards as journalists, end up spreading news whose facts often have not been verified.
