Dave Zirin, sports editor of the Nation Magazine, joins the Thursday edition of the 8 O’Clock Buzz and host Tony Castañeda to talk about the intersectionality between sports and politics. If sports can be thought of as the opiate of the people, then perhaps we need this distraction to survive our current political climate. But not everything about big-time sports is necessarily good for people’s health and well-being. The sports gambling economy, and especially the gambling addiction epidemic that has exploded among the young is a major problem for many. But racial integration, women’s rights, and Black Lives Matter are examples of major issues that have been addressed and accelerated by sports figures. There are problems with the corporatization of sports, but sports at its basic level can be used to affect positive political change.
