In the first couple of months of his second term, President Donald Trump has thrown the nation into chaos with unilateral, and perhaps illegal, cuts to funds already allocated by the U.S. Congress. The US Department of Agriculture has been in Trump’s crosshairs, with the cancellation of 500 million dollars in aid to food pantries, over a billion dollars in food aid to local schools and cuts to already-awarded producer grants. Throw on top of that the Trump Administration’s on-again, off-again, on-again threats of tariffs, and you have a recipe for severe strains on farmers. Here in Wisconsin, one of the nation’s leading agricultural states, farmers and policy makers fear economic disaster.
