In 2011, U.K. marathon runner Emily Robinson decided to forego any alcohol consumption for the month of January and subsequently reported great gains in her training regimen.  Robinson later became the deputy CEO of the nonprofit Alcohol Change UK, which used Robinson’s experience to promote the concept of “Dry January,” encouraging others to abstain during the first month of the year.  While medical science agrees on the serious damage to human health caused by heavy drinking and alcoholism, the advice regarding light to moderate drinking is all over the board.  Robert Kaplan is a public health scientist and a Senior Scholar Stanford School of Medicine Clinical Excellence Research Center, who decided to dig into the research for a definitive answer.
